Message from Clay
Sometimes the obstacles before us can seem overwhelming. I have found myself in that situation far more often than I would prefer. With so much experience, however, come some valuable lessons. I have learned when confronted with that situation to focus only on the things I can control; to take on the obstacles one at a time; to remember to learn and grow from the experience rather than just trying to get through it; to utilize my support system rather than trying to go it alone; and finally, to try and be an inspiration to others who may be facing their own obstacles. I have found this approach to be beneficial to me. I hope it will be for you as well. Remember, if I can you can.
September’s Recap
Clay started September off with a speaking engagement at Auburn Heights Baptist Church in Phenix City, Alabama, on September 3rd. Following this, Clay traveled to Houma, Louisiana, where he spoke at a men’s dinner on Saturday evening, September 16th, and then at three church services the following day. Clay then spent some time in Dallas on business matters before speaking to the members of the Grace Avenue Baptist Church in Frisco, Texas, on the evening of September 20th. On September 22nd, Clay traveled to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to speak at the Lowrance Electronics National Sales Conference, and on September 23rd he participated in the Lowrance employees’ fishing tournament.
October’s Outlook
Clay will begin the month by speaking at the Alabama Rehabilitation’s annual banquet in Huntsville, Alabama. Clay will then travel to Birmingham, Alabama, where he will speak at the Yearly Men’s Meeting at the New Life Church. Clay is currently expected to be on the program for an hour beginning at 7:15 a.m. On October 26th Clay will travel to Lexington, South Carolina, where he will speak at the Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church’s annual wild game dinner which will be held at a hunting lodge near Colombia.
Question and Answer with Clay
Q. Do you use Carolina rigs much? If so, do you have any problem feeling the bite?
A. I do use Carolina Rigs pretty often. I use them primarily in the spring and summer, especially if I am fishing scattered stumps, grass, or brush piles on ledges on sunny, calm days .As for feeling the bites, it is difficult sometimes to feel them with this rig even with today’s sensitive rods. I would suggest you use at least a 7 ft. or 7 ft. 6 in. (heavy action) and a super fast 6:3.1 or 7:1.1 speed reel. I use an All Star Platinum Series 7 ft. 6 in. (Carolina Rigging) rod paired with a Pflueger Trion Series 6:3.1 or 7:1.1 reel, and either 17-25 pound low stretch, low visibility, green Shakespeare Supreme super tough line or the same in Fluorocarbon.
Q. When you are not on the road giving your testimony, how often do you fish?
A. When I am at home, I usually fish on average about 4 to 6 days a week. When I am at a FLW tournament, it is normal for me to fish about 12 to 15 days consecutively.
Q. What do you do if you are faced with muddy water?
A. If I am faced with muddy water, first I try to get in an area that I know should hold fish for that time of year. Second, I look for the cleanest water available. If there is none, I try to go to the first available cover (treetops, piers, or if possible aquatic vegetation). Aquatic vegetation will "filter" the mud out faster. I try to fish these available places with lures that put off very loud vibrations or rattles, and colors that are as visible as possible in muddy water. My lure choices include Crankbaits, spinnerbaits, or jibs, or plastics that put out a lot of vibration. Good luck and great fishing!
If you have a question for Clay, please email it to qnawithclay@smgoutdoors.com and we will make sure it gets submitted to Clay. Needless to say, he will not be able to answer every question. He will, however, attempt to answer three or four representative questions each month.
Everyone who submits a question will be entered into a drawing to be held on December 31, 2006, for which the grand prize will be a day of fishing with Clay. The winner will be announced in the January 2007 Team Dyer Newsletter.
Clay’s Inspiration for October
I have had the wonderful opportunity to become an Assistant Football Coach during this off season for my Alma Mater, Hamilton High School. During this summer and fall I have built friendships with the other coaches and football players. One of the football players, a senior offensive lineman, has a younger brother who has cerebral palsy. Through this player, I have had the opportunity to get to know his younger brother. Watching the older brother communicate and relate with his younger brother is incredibly motivating and encouraging. Seeing the younger brother’s determination, heart, and competitive drive to participate in a sport in which he likely will never compete, simply makes me be more thankful that I am able to live my dream.
Clay’s Challenges for October
Please continue to pray for Clay’s safe travels and that he would continue to be a positive inspiration and role model for all with whom he comes into contact.
