Message from Clay

I have now begun what will be an incredibly hectic two months of travel, fishing and speaking. It is especially important for me to keep my energy and health during stretches like this. In these times, I can truly sense your prayers, well wishes and words of support and encouragement. Thanks. Knowing I have the support of my family and friends helps me to reach my highest potential. Remember, if I can you can

March's Recap

March was a busy month for Clay. On March 1st Clay spoke at a wild game dinner at the First Baptist Church of Lithia Springs, Georgia. On March 3rd he spoke at a wild game feast at the Hillcrest Baptist Church just outside of Birmingham. This was followed by a speaking engagement at a hunting and fishing exposition at the Rock Family Worship Center in Huntsville, Alabama, on March 9th. On March 10th Clay spoke at another wild game dinner at the Freedom Baptist Church, in Laurel, Mississippi. On the morning of March 17th Clay spoke at a Men’s Retreat at the Shocco Springs Conference Center in Talladega, Alabama. Following this morning speech, Clay immediately flew to the Dallas-Fort Worth area to speak that afternoon at the second annual "wild game fest" at the Diamond W Arena near Alvarado, Texas. Clay returned home to rest and do some practice fishing before traveling to Knoxville, Tennessee for a FLW tournament.

April's Outlook

After time off to enjoy Easter with family and friends, Clay will travel to Texas to attend the PAA fishing event at Lake Fork. Following this, Clay will speak at the Men’s Annual Sportsman’s Banquet and at a Sunday morning service at the Greenwood Baptist Church in Florence, South Carolina. Clay will spend the remainder of the month preparing for and competing in the FLW Tour event at Lake Norman in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Questions and Answers with Clay

Q.   When you’ve figured out a pattern for catching bass and all of a sudden it stops working, how do you know when to adjust?

A.   Fishing is pretty much changing nonstop, so I mainly just keep an open mind and go with my "instincts." I consider the conditions and everything I am faced with and usually do not make a drastic change if I feel like I am in a real good area. Then, usually I simply change lure colors or make my lure presentation different until I figure out how the fish want it.

Q.   Do you think it is important to have a lot of different colors of lures?

A.   I think that is a confidence thing. One of the greatest lures you can have is confidence in what you are using. But, I keep it simple. I do not like having a whole lot of tackle in my boat. Everywhere I fish bass eat the same thing. Therefore, I keep base colors of shad, crawfish, and a few bright colors for muddy water situations. As for my plastics, I keep black, brown, green and blue colors in my boat and use colored markers if I want to customize my lures to the forage. I am very fortunate that Strike King Lures makes some fantastic colors that keep the fish chasing my lures at all times!

Q.   What is the most difficult part of fishing for you?

A.   Probably the most difficult part of fishing for me is being out there in very foul weather conditions such as cold and strong winds. Due to my physical physique, it is tough to move around when I have on layers of cold weather gear. But, I just get tough and make the best of it!

If you have a question for Clay, please email it to qnawithclay@smgoutdoors.com, and we will make sure it is submitted to Clay. Needless to say, he will not be able to answer every question. He will, however, attempt to answer three or four representative questions each month

Clay's Inspiration for April

This past month I learned that a very close friend was diagnosed with lung cancer. I am not mentioning his name out of respect for this person, but he is associated with the FLW Tour. I got to know him very well last year. When I saw how he was handling and dealing with this adversity, I was totally in awe. He has not let this dreaded disease discourage him or get him down. I am blessed to have had the opportunity to be around him at all of our tournaments. To see how strong and positive he has been through this situation has inspired me so very much.

Clay's Challenges for April

I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for all your prayers and support. Without a shadow of doubt, I know it works. My fishing has gotten better and I am continually progressing in the direction I want to go. I would like to ask that you continue to pray for my strength and health as I am coming to the point in my schedule that will be very busy and strenuous. But…. I am ready and going into it with a full tank of energy!

C.A.S.T. for Kids

As you know, Clay is the National Spokesperson for C.A.S.T. for kids. The C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation was formed in 1991 to join volunteers who love to fish with disabled and disadvantaged children for a day of fishing in the outdoors. C.A.S.T. for kids furthers its mission by increasing awareness of disabled and disadvantaged children in our communities and teaching appreciation for natural resources.
