Message from Clay

While in Washington, I saw a sign I really liked. It said, "Your talents are God’s gift to you, what you do with them is your gift to Him." I really identify with that statement, and I apply it to my life. Not many of us can control our circumstances, but what we can all control is our response to them. We have only a very limited view of the big picture and no real way of predicting the future, but I believe that we each have an important role to play in bringing it about. I know that I feel very blessed to be born in the condition I was. It has given me opportunities and experiences I know I never would have had otherwise. It has also made me a better person. I encourage each of you to assess the talents you have been given and to make the most of them. The rewards are immense. Remember, if I can you can.

May’s Recap

Clay began May with a speaking engagement at a Youth Rally at the New Salem Baptist Church in Columbus, Mississippi. Two days later, he traveled to Paducah, Kentucky, to speak at a Men’s Retreat at Lake Kentucky. Clay spent the next three weeks fishing in the FLW Series tournament on Lake Dardanelle in Russellville, Arkansas, followed by the FLW Tour event at Beaver Lake, in Rogers, Arkansas. Following these tournaments and a short trip home for a friend’s wedding, Clay traveled to the State of Washington for a week of engagements there. First, he spoke at the Washington State Bass Club Jamboree. The Jamboree is an annual event for friends and family of bass club members. Many of the members joined with family members or friends for an informal tournament and a lot of comradery. The event was held over Memorial Day weekend, and Clay enjoyed an awesome laser light show, which took place on Grand Coulee Dam on Sunday night. Clay then traveled to Renton (a suburb of Seattle) where he spoke to a local Kiwanis club. Clay then had a few days off, so he toured the space needle, Pike’s market, Mt. St. Helen, and Mt. Rainier. For those of you who have not been to this part of the country, it is beautiful. On Thursday, Clay spoke to the children at East Hills School. He now has an even larger fan club. That weekend brought the main event – a charity fundraiser for CAST for Kids. The Seattle Seahawks were gracious enough to host the event. The event was appropriately titled the Seattle Seahawks Charity Bass Tournament. Clay said a few words at the auction on Friday night before being auctioned off as one of the celebrity fishing partners. The Seahawks had a large number of players and former players who volunteered their time to help the cause. It was very impressive to see an organization and a group of players who were so committed to giving back to their community. Mike Flood who is the VP of Community Relations for the Seahawks purchased Clay. Mike brought Michael Boulware, the Seahawks starting strong safety, with him to fish with Clay on Saturday. A great time was had by all and money was raised for a worthwhile cause. Clay has been invited back to be the Seahawks’ guest on the sideline for a game later this year. Clay then returned home for a couple of days before heading to Washington DC for his next tournament.

June’s Outlook

Clay will begin June by preparing for and fishing in the FLW Tournament on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. Clay will then travel to Enid, Oklahoma, to speak to the members of the First Church of the Nazarene on Father’s Day. After returning home for rest and relaxation, Clay will travel to Lafayette, Georgia, for a speaking engagement at the Ridgeway Baptist Church.

Questions and Answers with Clay

Q. Do you use sun tan lotion at all? If so, how do you put it on?

A. I actually do not use suntan lotion. I am trying to prevent skin cancer, and I actually use spray-on sunscreen or wear lightweight, long sleeve t-shirts and a cap with a long brim.

Q. What do you feel is the hardest part of fishing as a full time professional angler?

A. There are several aspects of this profession that can be tough even if you have been involved with it for a while. To me the toughest part is keeping my health and energy top notch along with figuring out how to really catch big limits of fish when the conditions are very tough.

Q. What lure do you feel has come through for you when you have been in the toughest conditions?

A. A small finesse plastic or a small crankbait. These two lures will usually work in just about any condition if presented correctly and will work if the fish are feeding at all or in a reaction mood.

If you have a question for Clay, please email it to qnawithclay@smgoutdoors.com, and we will make sure it is submitted to Clay. Needless to say, he will not be able to answer every question. He will, however, attempt to answer three or four representative questions each month

Clay’s Inspiration for June

May has been a tremendous month. During the month I was blessed to meet one of the staff of FLW who is battling cancer. This individual went in for treatment and came straight back to performing her duties at our tournaments. You can imagine the toll the treatment is taking on her, but she is keeping strong, high spirits during all of the adversity this dreaded disease is putting her through. I have continually witnessed her incredible faith, strong will and determination through this trying time. Seeing this, it truly makes me try even harder to be the person I want and need to be!

Clay’s Challenges for June

I want to thank all of you for all your prayers and thoughts. Please pray that my health and strength will continue to be strong as I am right in the middle of the busiest part of my schedule for 2007. Than you and God. Bless you all.

C.A.S.T. for Kids

As you know, Clay is the National Spokesperson for C.A.S.T. for kids. The C.A.S.T.for Kids Foundation was formed in 1991 to join volunteers who love to fish with disabled and disadvantaged children for a day of fishing in the outdoors. C.A.S.T. for Kids furthers its mission by increasing awareness of disabled and disadvantaged children in our communities and teaching appreciation for natural resources.
