A REEL HERO

Clay Dyer was born in 1978 with no legs and only part of a left arm. He caught his first fish when he was only 5 and he's been hooked on fishing ever since.

Clay taught himself how to do everything the other anglers do in spite of his lack of limbs.

Clay describes his learning process, “And see, I even get backlash like the other guys. Basically, it was like I said a lot of trial and error. I'd basically watch the other guys and how they'd do it, and watch their mechanics and how they cast and all that. Then, I'd actually get the rods myself and the equipment and try to use it where it was most comfortable on me.”

Wednesday, Clay is co-fishing with Toni Stoner from Georgia. She says Clay is an inspiration to many of the folks on the tour.

Stoner says, “You know we all look like this, and we take things for granted. And then you look at Clay, and he told me he's not handicapped. Because he doesn't know anything other than the way he is.”

Clay hopes he can be an example to those who are afraid of their own shortcomings.

“A motto I live by is if I can do it, you can. You know? You just see so many people who think they can't do this or they can't do that or they don't have the confidence or whatever it is, whatever tool they may need. When really and truthfully, they can do it if they just set their mind and their heart to it, and be willing to work hard enough to get the job done.”
